Roof Repair project

Location: Jalalabat City

Project description and objectives

The goal of this project was to complete the roofs on damanged houses that would otherwise not receive other assistance. This protected these houes from weather damage over the winter.

Major Activities Completed and Results

The UN lead house construction project was designed to provide winter shelter to nearly 170 houses in Jalalabat that were destroyed during the events of June 2010. But a number of houses had only damanged roofs in part of the building and these residences had sufficient warm living space for the winter. Thus it was thought that repairs could wait until spring and these houses did not qualify for assistance. However this would mean that the areas of the house with a damanged roof would be exposed to weather over the winter, likely causing significant additional damange to the structure.

CDI provided materials to these houses in order to be able to close the roofs prior to winter rains. Home owners themselves provided labor. This early action saved the house walls and floor from weather damage over the winter and will allow the house owners to undertake further repairs on their own in the spring. Atotal of 9 houses were assisted.
